For those still struggling with the business model aspect…

The business model describes the overall schemata of your business. How it operates, the various entities that comprise of your business etc. Visualising the overall business model will allow you to determine which aspects of the business can benefit from design.

See this page from Wikipedia for a whole lot of different business models. WHich one applies to your project?

Making Associations October 9, 2007

Somewhere in a previous class I had mentioned Derren Brown. He is a is a psychological illusionist and some of his shows are mind boggling. While he is accused of rigging his shows, he does make a lot of sense about how the mind works and how easy it really is to manipulate people. Here is a wikipedia link to derren brown.

Watch this video carefully. I have a question for you. Do you think celebrity ads actually help sell more because people work out brand benefits based on the celebrity, or is it just vague associations that just push pleasure and impulse buttons?

Here’s a whole bunch of ooooh. I dislike concept-candy, and I’d rather you understand and communicate the business properly, even if the final work isn’t cool or clever. Nevertheless you just have to admire cool ads. Visit this page for even more of the same. I’ll add this to the resource section.

The identity

Wow. You guys must be exhausted. I’ve seen nothing but tons and tons of research and documentation, and now it’s time you started work on the identity of your project. For those of you who have some sort of logo, logotype, monogram or any sort of a symbol, you also need to create an in-depth guide to how the identity will be used.

See an example PDF file here. Right click to save.

——————————————————-

For those who do not have an identity in the sense of a symbol still require an identity. In some cases it will be concept or character art. Flesh out your concepts, how they look, stories behind them etc. visit conceptart.org for some great stuff.

For those working on re-branding exercises, you may want to check this page out. Identityworks keeps track of identity changes in Large corporations and brands. And to round it all off, here’s the Big page of Branding and Corporate identity resources.

Then theres cidoc, a new magazine and an interesting new content destination for designers interested in branding and corporate identity. cidoc.net brings you an archive of corporate identity documentation, corporate design manuals, styleguides and also logo- und manual-reviews…

Here is a page on case studies of International logos. This one has a large database.

Process Graph September 24, 2007

Filed under: Resources — finalear @ 12:07 pm

Last time we met we discussed the visualisation of information. A process chart will help you visualise and pre-plan your project. By creating a visual map of the overall process, you will have a trail to pick through as you complete your work.

I have on my hard disk a process map from the dotcom days. The author is Clark McLeod, and it shows the process of building a website or software app from scratch.

PDF file: Click here to see it, or right click and save.

Can you see how visualising your project in this manner makes life a lot easier in the long run. You could try using mind mapping software (I made this with Freemind) to map out the general scheme of things, and then go back in and flesh out the details.
